Structural Analysis and FEA Methods in Ship Design

Finite Element Analysis (FEA) has become an indispensable tool for verifying structural integrity in ship design. We address load scenarios specific to marine structures.

Traditional analytical methods fall short for complex ship geometries. FEA divides the entire ship structure into small elements and calculates stress, strain and displacement values at each point.

Load Scenarios

The main load scenarios evaluated in ship design are: hogging (heavy bow and stern, light middle section) and sagging (heavy middle section, light ends) conditions, dynamic loads from waves and local loads on the deck.

Fatigue Analysis

Ship structures are exposed to millions of load cycles over a century. Classification societies require fatigue life calculations at critical connection points. Calculating fatigue life over 25 years using the S-N curve method is standard.

The CMS AS Approach

On projects, our engineering team uses ANSYS and MAESTRO software. A project-specific FEA report is submitted to the classification society for approval. Over the last 10 projects, an average 8% weight saving has been achieved through structural optimization.
