The block building method involves manufacturing a ship in separate sections (blocks) that are subsequently assembled. This approach allows more efficient use of yard space, enables parallel production lines, and significantly shortens the overall build time.
Process Stages
In the first stage, the vessel is divided into sections using digital design tools. Each block undergoes plate cutting, forming, welding, and surface preparation. At CMS AS, over 100 quality control checkpoints per block ensure assembly tolerances are maintained within ±2 mm.
During assembly, large cranes lock the blocks together. Expert welding teams complete the joints to Lloyd's Register standards. In the final stage, non-destructive testing verifies weld integrity.
