Ship Outfitting: Mechanical and Electrical Systems

Outfitting is one of the most complex stages of shipbuilding. How are piping, HVAC, electrical distribution and fire suppression systems integrated?

When the structural construction of a ship is complete, the real engineering challenge begins: coordinated assembly of tens of thousands of equipment and components in a limited volume. What distinguishes the outfitting process from other construction is the integration of thousands of interdependent systems in three-dimensional space.

Piping Systems

Fuel, fresh water, seawater, ballast, bilge and fire suppression pipelines extend thousands of metres. Each pipeline is separated by color coding, using different materials such as steel, copper and CPVC. Pressure tests and leak tests are mandatory steps for each system before commissioning.

HVAC and Climate Control

Separate HVAC zones are created for living quarters, control rooms and the engine room. Fresh air volume, humidity and temperature are designed to IMO standards. For refrigerants, F-gas alternatives with zero ODP (Ozone Depletion Potential) are becoming mandatory.

Electrical Systems

The main switchboard, emergency generator and UPS systems are sized according to SOLAS requirements. An increasing number of ships are moving to the Integrated Power System (IPS) architecture, which improves energy efficiency by 15-20%.
