IMO 2050 Targets and the Role of Shipyards

IMO's net zero emission target by 2050 is transforming all stakeholders in the maritime ecosystem. We address the critical role that shipyards play in this transformation.

IMO's updated Greenhouse Gas Strategy of 2023 targets the maritime sector reaching net zero emissions by 2050. This target necessitates a fundamental transformation from ship design and construction to fuel systems.

Alternative Fuels

LNG (liquefied natural gas), methanol, ammonia and hydrogen stand out as alternatives to conventional HFO. Shipyards must develop the competence to build storage and supply systems compatible with these fuels.

Energy Efficiency Technologies

Air-lubricated hulls, wind-assisted propulsion systems (Flettner rotors, foldable sails) and optimized propeller designs are high on the agenda. Integrating these systems at the design stage can provide 20-30% fuel savings over the ship's lifetime.
