Autonomous Vessels: The Future of the Maritime Industry

AI and automation technologies are rewriting the rulebook of maritime. Where is autonomous vessel technology and how is shipyard design affected by this change?

Four levels of autonomous ships are defined under IMO's MASS (Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships) framework. While Level 1 (remote monitoring support) is becoming widespread today, Levels 3-4 (fully autonomous) are in the research phase.

Design Changes

On autonomous ships, the bridge undergoes transformation in the traditional sense; space is made for sensor fusion systems, LIDAR, radar and camera integration. Engine room design is also reshaped according to remote monitoring and automatic fault detection.

Shipyard Adaptation

This transformation offers new opportunities for shipyards: services such as integrating automation systems into the vessel and commissioning tests are becoming a value-added area of expertise. CMS AS continues strategic partnership talks with technology companies to build competence in these areas.
